What is this Botox thing all about? This is a good question because I don’t think it was ever explained very well. In your face there are many muscles which are right underneath the skin. As these muscles contract the animate your face and allow you to have expressions. If you’re angry you can tell because creases form over your eyebrows. When you smile the muscles around your eyes contract and you can have crow’s feet. When you scrunch your nose up you might have lines across the top of your nose. The lines that form are caused by contraction of the underlying muscle. Deep creases in your forehead occur when  the frontalis muscle flexes. These creases are not attractive. They may or may not make your face look like it’s older but having deep creases is not a sign of beauty. Neuro- modulators like Botox have been developed for use for cosmetic indications to treat these creases or wrinkles. The medication is injected around the muscle. It paralyzes the muscle, so it cannot contract. When it cannot contract it does not wrinkle the skin above it and the forehead lines disappear. Generally, Botox lasts about three months. After that time, clients need to be re-treated or their forehead creases will reappear. This can also be used near the top of the nose to reduce the vertical lines you may have near the area of the top of the nose and the forehead. Also, crow’s feet are treated in this way. The general recommendation is 20 to 25 units in the forehead and 20 to 25 units to treat the crow’s feet. There are other areas where Botox is helpful, but these areas are the most commonly treated.
