Fillers Q & A

What are cosmetic fillers?

As you age, your skin naturally loses the collagen, elastin, and fat that keeps it plump and youthful. This often results in hollow-looking cheeks, as well as fine lines and wrinkles around your face.

Cosmetic fillers literally fill in these problem areas to plump up your skin. They’re often called volumizers because they add volume to areas that have lost fat, such as your jawline, cheeks, and more.

Which areas do cosmetic fillers treat?

Cosmetic fillers reduce wrinkles by plumping up your skin. They can be used as volumizers to treat:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Hollow cheeks
  • Thin lips
  • Visible scars
  • Facial deformities
  • Lower lid shadows
  • Facial creases and dimples
  • Sagging hands

Dr. Albaugh also uses cosmetic fillers to recontour the jawline, chin, temples, and cheeks. These treatments can redefine your bone structure and give you sharper cheekbones.

Fillers are primarily used to treat static wrinkles, rather than dynamic wrinkles. While dynamic wrinkles form as a result of muscle movement, their static counterparts are caused by volume loss, which results in saggy skin.

How do cosmetic fillers work?

At your initial consultation, Dr. Albaugh examines your medical history, asks about any medications you’re taking, and discusses your antiaging goals for the future. These questions help him determine exactly where to place your injections to achieve the most desirable results.

While there are many different types of fillers to choose from, the most common are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance found in your body. These injections reduce the appearance of wrinkles, plump up hollow cheeks, smooth scars, and more.

At your second appointment, Dr. Albaugh injects your chosen cosmetic filler directly into predetermined points in your skin. Each session takes anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes, though the filler amount you need depends entirely on your unique case.

Unlike alternative antiaging treatments, dermal fillers provide instant results, as they add volume to your skin right away. In most cases, results last between three and six months.
