Laser Hair Removal Q & A

What is laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal eliminates unwanted hair and prevents the hair follicles from producing new growth.

When the laser itself beams highly concentrated light into the follicles, the pigment inside those follicles absorbs it. This destroys the hair for good, so you don’t have to worry about shaving ever again.

How does laser hair removal work?

For targeted, effective hair removal, Dr. Albaugh uses the BBL™ by Sciton® — the most powerful intense pulsed light (IPL) device on the market. The BBL delivers light energy that gently heats up the top layers of your skin.

Unlike alternative lasers, the BBL produces lower fluence pulses at a high repetition rate, which makes the experience as fast and comfortable as possible. It offers extremely even heating and reduces the chances of missed areas.

What sets the BBL apart from comparable lasers is that it provides continuous cooling to minimize skin irritation during and after each treatment. Because the laser directly targets your hair follicles, each session takes approximately 15 minutes, depending on the treatment area.

Which areas does the BBL laser treat?

The BBL is safe to use on nearly any body part where you might have unwanted hair, including:

  • Face
  • Underarms
  • Back
  • Arms
  • Legs
  • Bikini line

The treatment works best on fair-skinned individuals with dark hair, and it’s important to note than you cannot have a tan while undergoing laser therapy treatments. If you’ve been highly exposed to the sun within the last four weeks, tell Dr. Albaugh prior to your first session.

Depending on your treatment area, expect to have at least five treatments at four- to eight-week intervals.

What can I expect following my laser hair removal treatment?

You can expect minor redness and swelling for about one to two days following each of your sessions. However, the BBL is safe enough that you won’t need any downtime following the treatment.

Most patients see dramatic results following their hair removal sessions, at least 70 to 80 percent hair reduction. Any hair you do have left should be noticeably lighter and thinner in appearance.
